

Curatorial Narrative In the mid-nineteenth century, Fedor Grigoryevich Solntsev’s “Ocherki rez’by po slonovoi kosti na trone Ioanna III (izobrazhenie 11.)” occupies a pivotal position in the development of classical realism. Executed between 1849 and 1853, this work exemplifies the artist’s mastery of linear brushwork and his ability to imbue architectural subjects with an almost tactile quality. As we examine Solntsev’s rendering of the throne room, it becomes clear that he is less concerned with capturing the fleeting effects of light than with establishing a precise chromatic structure.When enlarged to 44×63, the beige tones and sepia undertones of “Ocherki rez’by” acquire a sense of spatial weight that is at once imposing and measured.
